GPA Calculator

Work out your Grade Point Average on the standard 4.0 scale from your course grades and credit hours.

The GPA formula

GPA = Total grade points ÷ Total credit hours, where each course's grade points are its grade value on the 4.0 scale multiplied by its credit hours. An A is worth 4.0, a B is 3.0, a C is 2.0, a D is 1.0 and an F is 0.0, with plus and minus grades in between. Because courses carry different credit hours, a grade in a 4-credit course moves your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit course — the credit hours act as weights.

Worked example

Suppose you take four courses: an A in a 3-credit course (4.0 × 3 = 12 points), a B+ in a 3-credit course (3.3 × 3 = 9.9 points), an A- in a 4-credit course (3.7 × 4 = 14.8 points) and a B in a 3-credit course (3.0 × 3 = 9 points). Total grade points = 45.7, total credits = 13, so GPA = 45.7 ÷ 13 = 3.52. Press Calculate above with the pre-filled example to see the same result.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Add up grade points multiplied by credit hours for every course, then divide by the total credit hours. A 3-credit A (4.0) contributes 12 grade points.

What is a good GPA?

It depends on your school and goals. A 3.0 is a B average, 3.5 and above is generally considered strong, and many honours programmes look for 3.5 or higher. Always check your own institution's standards.

Does this calculator use a weighted GPA scale?

No. This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale. Weighted scales, which give extra points for honours or AP classes, differ by school.
